Gregory Robinson, former Director of the James Webb Space Telescope at NASA, is a renowned racial equality speaker whose powerful talks are grounded in lived experience. Now a faculty member at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, he teaches leadership in large-scale projects and knowledge strategy. Born into a segregated America as one of 11 children in rural Virginia, Gregory’s life journey has been shaped by the realities of systemic inequality and the pursuit of excellence against the odds. His speaking topics include leadership, overcoming adversity, and racial equity in STEM fields. Drawing from his own journey through segregated schooling to global scientific success, Gregory offers an authentic, compelling voice in conversations around inclusion and social justice.

Gregory’s remarkable trajectory began when he earned a full scholarship to Virginia Union University, graduating with a Mathematics degree. He then went on to complete a second bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering at Howard University, later earning an MBA from Averett College and completing an executive programme at the Harvard Kennedy School. In 1989, he joined NASA, quickly rising through the ranks due to his outstanding technical and leadership skills. Roles at the Goddard Space Flight Center, NOAA, and the Glenn Research Center followed, each cementing his reputation as a calm, capable leader who delivered results in complex and often high-stakes environments.

Over a distinguished three-decade career, Gregory has received numerous accolades, including the TIME 100 Impact Award, TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People 2022, and EBONY’s Power 100. He was also honoured with the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award, the highest recognition in the U.S. civil service. As Director of the Webb Telescope Program, he successfully led a global team of 20,000 and improved performance rates from 55% to 95%, delivering what many regard as NASA’s most ambitious and successful mission of the 21st century.

In his talks, Gregory delves deeply into the intersections of race, leadership, and innovation, especially within elite scientific institutions. His personal story illustrates the impact of educational access, representation, and resilience. He is hired not only for his brilliant scientific credentials but because his lived experience offers a rare, vital perspective on systemic inequality and how organisations can foster true inclusion. Gregory inspires audiences to confront racial inequities head-on while championing excellence and accountability.
