Anita Rani is a respected British broadcaster, writer, and passionate racial equality speaker whose work is deeply informed by her lived experiences as a British-Asian woman. Currently, she is a host of Countryfile and BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, where she champions women’s voices and shines a light on underrepresented communities. Her role as Chancellor of the University of Bradford further underscores her commitment to education, inclusion, and community empowerment. Anita’s upbringing as the child of Punjabi immigrants and her journey navigating identity and representation in British media have fuelled her advocacy for racial and social equality. As a speaker, she addresses topics including identity, intersectionality, representation in media, and empowering the next generation of diverse voices.
Anita’s path into broadcasting began early—at just 14, she hosted her first radio show on Sunrise Radio, demonstrating her precocious talent for storytelling. After studying broadcasting at the University of Leeds, she began building a diverse career in media, starting with Channel Five and BBC Asian Network in 2005. From there, she became a recognisable face across British television with roles on Sky Sports’ Cricket AM and BBC Two’s Desi DNA. Her warm yet incisive style won her more presenting roles on Watchdog, This Morning, and Pointless, and a place as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2016. These appearances helped position her as a relatable figure with a powerful platform to discuss identity and belonging.
In recent years, Anita has continued to diversify her influence. She was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2021, using her voice to advocate for refugees. Her memoir, The Right Sort of Girl became a Sunday Times Bestseller, praised for its raw honesty about race, class, and womanhood. In 2023, she received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Leeds, recognising her contributions to broadcasting and advocacy. That same year, she released her debut novel, Baby Does a Runner and in 2025 presented The Brontës by Anita Rani: Sisters of Disruption on Sky Arts, reinforcing her continued commitment to storytelling and representation.
As a speaker, Anita explores themes such as cultural identity, gender equity, and racial justice—offering insights drawn from her personal and professional life. She connects with audiences on topics like breaking glass ceilings, authentic leadership, and the power of diverse narratives in media. Her credibility, charisma, and cross-sector experience make her a powerful voice on racial equality. Organisations hire Anita not only for her eloquence and profile, but for the depth of understanding and genuine commitment she brings to building a fairer, more inclusive society.
