Demi Stokes inspires audiences with her journey from grassroots football to global success. She speaks openly about overcoming racism in sports, advocating for inclusion, and balancing her professional football career with her family life as a same-sex parent. With over 200 senior appearances for Manchester City, more than 60 international caps for England, and numerous domestic trophies to her name, Demi brings the authority of elite performance to every stage.
Born in Birmingham and raised in South Shields, Demi began her football career at just eight years old in Sunderland’s youth academy. By the age of 16, she was making her senior debut for Sunderland, helping the team win the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division and reach the FA Cup final. Her talent led to a scholarship in the United States, where she played for the University of South Florida and later joined the Vancouver Whitecaps before returning to England.
Throughout her career, she has been a powerful advocate for racial equality, drawing from her own experiences as a Black athlete in a predominantly white sport. In interviews with the BBC and England Football, she has courageously shared stories of experiencing racial abuse from a young age, using those challenges to build resilience rather than resentment.
During the rise of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, Demi was outspoken about the importance of representation, noting how rare it was for her to see people who looked like her in leadership or sporting roles as a child. Today, she takes pride in being that role model for others. As one of the few Black players in the Lionesses’ squad, her presence in England’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2022-winning team was not just historic in football terms—it was symbolic for young Black girls across the UK. She also used Black History Month to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of Black women in football, lending her voice to the wider call for equity in sport.
Demi Stokes is not just a football champion, but a champion of visibility and empowerment. Her ability to speak authentically about race, identity, and leadership makes her one of the most impactful BAME speakers in British sport. She is a Brand Ambassador for Pampers UK and a role model for equity in sport, leadership, and LGBTQ+ visibility.
