Aaliyah Powell is a British Taekwondo World Champion, and the youngest ever medallist in the competition, having secured bronze. Competing at the highest level for GB Taekwondo Academy, she makes for a compelling racial equality speaker, who blends elite athleticism with passionate advocacy. She uses her platform to address powerful topics such as resilience, performance, dedication, diversity, fashion, and the voices of young people. Her lived experiences as a young Black woman breaking boundaries in a predominantly white sport shape her voice and vision. Aaliyah connects deeply with her audiences, not just as a high-performing athlete but as someone who has overcome setbacks and used them as fuel to succeed – and to speak truth to power.
Beginning her journey in sport through street dance, she had committed to taekwondo by the age of nine. Her early career was a rapid rise through junior international competitions, claiming gold at the 2018 Junior World Championships, as well as the Austrian and Croatia Opens that same year. Even in her teens, she was a force on the European circuit, with standout victories at the Dutch Open and President’s Cup. Her talent earned her a place at the GB Taekwondo Academy, but that first year came with hardship – two knee surgeries for a torn meniscus. Battling through pain and uncertainty, she rebuilt herself physically and mentally, a journey she shares to highlight the power of perseverance.
Aaliyah has continued to thrive on the international stage. In 2023, she added a World Championships bronze to her record and claimed gold at the Luxembourg Open (Junior), reinforcing her reputation as one of Britain’s top taekwondo athletes. Her standout moment came with her 2018 Junior World Championship gold, a historic milestone that remains a defining achievement. Outside of sport, she has attracted major sponsorship from Nike and is exploring fashion and modelling, using these spaces to champion diversity and redefine mainstream images of athleticism and identity.
In her speaking engagements, Aaliyah brings together the worlds of sport, fashion, music, and identity to challenge narratives and push for racial equality. She discusses the challenges of underrepresentation, the importance of staying true to oneself, and how resilience and belief can reshape futures. Her topics—ranging from next-gen leadership to the intersection of sport and culture—are infused with lived truth and youthful perspective. Aaliyah is hired not just for her accolades but for her voice: authentic, inspiring, and vital to today’s conversations about race, identity, and ambition.
