One of England’s most impressive defenders, footballer, Anita Asante has played at an elite level for over 15 years. The international star has had an equally prominent club career, representing teams in the Premier League, USA and Sweden. Despite such success, Anita has been subject to racist discrimination from football supporters and the public and is now using her platform to be a positive voice for change in the race debate, as a speaker and personality.
An honour for any sportsperson, Anita was selected to represent England in the Under 17 team, having shown promise and talent as a young player. After captaining the Under 19s side, and making her senior debut, Anita was selected for the Team GB 2012 Olympic football team. Amassing 71 caps for England to date, Anita is an impressive defender, who has represented her country in the 2011 World Cup and was honoured by the Queen with an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2006.
As far as club experience goes, Anita has represented some of the best in the world, including Arsenal, Chelsea and her current team, Aston Villa. She has also spent time overseas, playing for teams like the Chicago Red Stars and FC Rosengård, where she won the Svenska Cupen. In 2007 Antia was part of the all-team Chelsea team who clinched the quadruple award, having won the UEFA Women’s Cup, FA Women’s National Premier League and the FA Women’s Premier League Cup, a testament to her unrivalled performance on the pitch.
Show Racism the Red Card aims to tackle racial abuse in football and is a message Anita has supported and promoted as an ambassador of Show Racism the Red Card. Having experienced racism herself, as a successful Black female footballer, Anita is empowering other sportswomen to take a stand and achieve despite the adversity faced. At events, Anita expands on the issues she’s faced and offers advice for every industry to embrace diversity.
