Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE is an internationally acclaimed double bassist, broadcaster, author and cultural leader, recognised as one of the most influential figures in British classical music. As the Founder of Chineke!, Europe’s first professional orchestra predominantly comprising Black and ethnically diverse musicians, she has transformed representation within classical music. With a distinguished career spanning performance, education and advocacy, Chi-chi has dedicated herself to creating opportunities for underrepresented talent. Her pioneering achievements and commitment to diversity make her an exceptional BAME speaker, inspiring audiences through her experiences of breaking barriers, challenging convention and championing inclusion.

Chi-chi studied at the Royal Academy of Music before continuing her musical education in Rome under renowned double bassist Franco Petracchi. She subsequently enjoyed a remarkable 35-year career as Principal Double Bassist with leading London orchestras, establishing herself as a respected performer. Recognising the lack of ethnic diversity within classical music, she founded Chineke! in 2015, alongside the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, creating professional opportunities for musicians from underrepresented backgrounds. Within two years, Chineke! became the youngest orchestra to perform at the BBC Proms, marking a significant milestone in British musical history.

Under Chi-chi’s leadership, Chineke! has gained international recognition, performing at prestigious venues including the Southbank Centre, Lincoln Center, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Lucerne Festival. The organisation has commissioned 15 works by living Black composers, helping diversify classical repertoire. Her contributions have earned numerous accolades, including an MBE in 2001, OBE in 2017 and CBE in 2022 for services to music and diversity. She received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Cambridge University in 2023 and was named Person of the Year at the Black British Business Awards. Her broadcasting achievements include presenting six series of Chi-chi’s Classical Champions on Classic FM.

Chi-chi is hired as a speaker for her ability to connect artistic excellence with inclusive leadership and meaningful organisational change. Having addressed audiences at UK Sport and the House of Commons, she shares valuable insights into overcoming discrimination, challenging institutional barriers and building diverse teams. Her experiences establishing an internationally successful orchestra demonstrate the importance of representation, resilience and visionary leadership, making her an inspiring choice for diversity, equality and inclusion events.
