Christian Malcolm is a prominent figure in British athletics, currently serving as the Head Coach of the British Athletics Olympic Programme. His extensive experience as an elite sprinter, combined with his personal journey as a Black athlete, fuels his dedication to promoting racial equality. As a speaker, Christian addresses topics including sprinting, athletics, mental resilience, drive and determination, and peak performance, often highlighting how overcoming racial barriers has shaped his career.

Christian’s athletic career is marked by significant achievements. In 1998, he achieved a rare double victory in the 100m and 200m at the World Junior Championships, setting a Welsh senior and UK junior record in the 100m with a time of 10.12 seconds. That same year, he secured a silver medal in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games, setting a European junior and Welsh senior record of 20.29 seconds. Throughout his career, he amassed medals at the European Indoor Championships, World Indoor Championships, and World Championships, representing Great Britain in four Olympic Games. Notably, he reached the 200m final in both the 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing Olympics, finishing fifth in both instances.

Transitioning to coaching after retiring from competition in 2014, Christian took on roles such as British Athletics’ technical lead for sprint relays from 2015 to 2019. In this capacity, he guided the men’s 4x100m relay team to a gold medal and the women’s team to a silver at the 2017 World Championships in London. This accomplishment earned him the BBC Sports Coach of the Year Award in 2017. In 2019, he became the Head of Performance and Coaching at Athletics Australia before being appointed as the Head Coach of the British Athletics Olympic Programme in 2020.

As a speaker, Christian delves into his experiences to discuss sprinting techniques, the discipline of athletics, and the mental resilience required to excel. He emphasises the importance of drive and determination in achieving peak performance, relating these qualities to his own journey of overcoming challenges, including racial barriers in sport. Organisations seeking an inspiring speaker who can intertwine themes of athletic excellence with insights on racial equality and personal perseverance will find Christian Malcolm’s narrative both compelling and transformative.
