Dr Anita Mitra is an NHS doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology and a cancer surgeon currently working as a Subspecialty Fellow in Gynaecological Oncology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Widely recognised as the Gynae Geek on social media, where she has amassed over 167,000 Instagram followers, Anita has become a trusted voice in women’s health, “making it less scary to own a vagina”. Her lived experiences as a woman of colour in medicine have been pivotal in shaping her voice as a racial equality advocate and speaker. Motivated by the inequalities she has witnessed first-hand, she brings an authentic and passionate lens to discussions around diversity, inclusion, and representation in healthcare and beyond. Anita frequently speaks on topics such as racial bias in medicine, the impact of cultural taboos on women’s health, and the power of inclusive health education.

Anita’s journey began at the University of Leicester, where she earned a BSc in Medical Biochemistry before completing her MBChB in Medicine in 2011. Her clinical training started as an FY1 Doctor at University Hospitals of Leicester, followed by a year as an FY2 Doctor at Northampton General Hospital, where she gained experience across trauma and orthopaedics, A&E, and general practice. In 2013, she was appointed Clinical Research Fellow in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Imperial College London, a role that cemented her commitment to both clinical excellence and academic research. She advanced through the ranks as an NIHR Academic Specialty Trainee in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from 2014, combining clinical practice with a drive for innovation and education.

In addition to her NHS work, Anita is a best-selling author of The Gynae Geek and Problem Periods, two books that have helped demystify women’s health for a broader audience. Her medical communication work has been featured across national media, including ITV’s This Morning, BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, and publications such as Women’s Health, Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire. She is also a sought-after podcast guest and panel speaker. Her ability to translate complex medical topics into accessible content has earned her recognition not just in healthcare, but in the wider public discourse on health inequality and empowerment.

As a speaker, Anita delivers compelling sessions on racial disparities in healthcare, inclusive communication in clinical settings, and the importance of diverse role models in medicine. Her focus on racial equality is informed by her own experiences navigating the healthcare system as a woman of colour and amplified by her commitment to evidence-based advocacy. Audiences consistently praise her for her clarity, relatability, and fearless commitment to justice. Whether addressing medical professionals, corporate teams, or public audiences, Anita’s talks are impactful, educational, and deeply resonant—making her a powerful and timely voice for any organisation striving to advance equality, diversity, and inclusion.
