Eric Moussambani is a motivational speaker and racial equality advocate, drawing deeply on his lived experiences to inspire audiences worldwide. Eric was the first Equatorial Guinean swimmer to compete at the Olympics, and he has been a coach for the national swimming squad of Equatorial Guinea since 2012. His journey from an inexperienced swimmer to an Olympic athlete has given him a unique perspective on perseverance, opportunity, and systemic inequality. As a speaker, Eric addresses topics such as overcoming adversity, breaking racial and socio-economic barriers, representation in global sport, and the importance of inclusion and diversity in elite athletic spaces. His story resonates with organisations seeking to foster greater racial equality and highlight the power of resilience.
Eric’s extraordinary journey began in 2000, when he became the first swimmer to represent Equatorial Guinea at the Olympic Games in Sydney. With just eight months of training—much of it in a hotel pool only 12 metres long—he entered the competition as a wildcard invited by the International Olympic Committee. Having never even seen an Olympic-sized pool before, he faced overwhelming odds. In his 100-metre freestyle heat, Eric struggled but managed to finish, setting a national record despite recording the slowest time in Olympic history. His perseverance captivated global audiences and earned him the affectionate nickname, Eric the Eel. In 2001, he competed at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, where he set another national record in the 50-metre freestyle. Although he didn’t participate in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, he remained committed to the sport and its development in his home country.
In 2012, Eric was appointed national coach of Equatorial Guinea’s swimming team, marking a significant milestone in his career. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to develop the next generation of swimmers in a country with limited sporting infrastructure. His story continues to inspire media coverage, documentaries, and interviews, underscoring his impact as a symbol of determination and progress in the face of adversity.
Eric’s speaking engagements focus on themes that resonate across corporate, educational, and sporting sectors: resilience against systemic obstacles, racial inequality in international sport, underrepresentation of athletes from less developed nations, and the transformational power of inclusion. His powerful narrative demonstrates how opportunity and support can unlock human potential, regardless of race or background. Organisations hire Eric not only for his extraordinary personal story but also for his ability to challenge audiences to reflect on their role in promoting equity and inclusion across all levels of society.
