Joycelyn Longdon is a dynamic environmental activist, sustainability advocate, and diversity and inclusion keynote speaker. She is the Founder of ClimateInColour, an online platform dedicated to making climate science and environmental conversations more accessible, diverse, and engaging. Through ClimateInColour, Joycelyn has built a community of over 30,000 environmentally curious individuals, discussing topics such as climate justice, climate colonialism, and systems change. Her passion for broadening participation in climate action extends to her work with institutions like the University of Oxford, where she collaborates to increase engagement with students who identify as BIPOC or LGBTQ+.
As a PhD student in the Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Risk programme at the University of Cambridge, Joycelyn brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues. Her research focuses on the co-design of justice-led conservation technologies, such as bioacoustics, for the preservation of tropical forest ecosystems, particularly working with rural, forest-fringe communities that are often excluded from mainstream conservation efforts. She combines machine learning, ecoacoustics, forest ecology, and local ecological knowledge to contribute to the emerging field of Conservation Data Justice. Joycelyn’s scholarly work has been presented to a wide range of audiences, including her impactful TEDxLondon Talk.
Joycelyn’s academic and professional journey is equally impressive, with a background that spans astrophysics, artificial intelligence, and digital marketing. She earned a BS in Astrophysics from Cardiff University, followed by an MRes in Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Risk at Cambridge, where she is now pursuing her PhD. Her early career included roles such as Digital Marketing Executive at MVF and Head of Community and Growth at Ferly. She is also the founder of BlackOnBlack, a creative studio championing diversity in the creative industry. Joycelyn’s ability to weave together her diverse experiences allows her to deliver powerful and eloquent presentations on environmental, sustainability, and diversity topics, engaging audiences with both scientific rigour and personal passion.
Beyond her research and activism, Joycelyn is a recognised environmental educator and communicator. She has collaborated with leading organisations, including Meta, Estee Lauder, Samsung, and Greenpeace, and frequently appears on Sky News’ Daily Climate Show to discuss climate issues. Her influence has been acknowledged by her inclusion in British Vogue’s December 2023 ‘Forces for Change’ Issue and by winning the Emerging Designer London Design Medal in 2022. Whether speaking on ecological injustice, colonial impacts on developing nations, or practical solutions for sustainability, Joycelyn Longdon inspires hope and action in her audience, making her a sought-after keynote speaker.
