Dr Nii Addy is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University, an internationally renowned neuroscientist, and a passionate racial equality speaker. Working within Yale’s School of Medicine, Dr Addy is also the Director of a leading research programme investigating the neurobiological foundations of motivation and its links to anxiety and depression. His lived experiences as a Black academic in a traditionally underrepresented field have powerfully shaped his mission: to bridge the gap between science and society, particularly within marginalised communities. With a compelling blend of scientific insight and personal narrative, Dr Addy frequently speaks on topics such as neuroscience, mental health, the science of mental health, faith, diversity and inclusion, and being Black in science.

Dr Addy’s academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Duke University, followed by a PhD in neuroscience from Yale. His early career was marked by a deep curiosity about brain function and a commitment to improving public understanding of mental health. After completing postdoctoral training in psychiatry at Yale, he earned a faculty position at the university—where he has now worked for over a decade. His path has not only been shaped by academic excellence but also a personal drive to challenge systemic barriers and promote equity in education, science, and healthcare.

In recent years, Dr Addy has received widespread recognition for both his scientific contributions and his public advocacy. He has featured in major media outlets such as National Public Radio and The Source Magazine, offering expert commentary on mental health and racial inequality. His impactful collaborations with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), former NBA star Allan Houston, and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies underscore his influence across fields. These engagements have helped bring critical mental health discussions into mainstream and corporate spaces.

As a speaker, Dr Addy offers a rare combination of scientific credibility and cultural insight. His topics—ranging from the neurochemistry of anxiety to the challenges of being Black in science—are delivered with authenticity and depth. He connects with audiences through faith-informed reflection, evidence-based strategies, and a strong commitment to equity. Dr Addy is hired not only for his expertise but also for his unique ability to make complex science relatable, champion diversity, and foster inclusive mental health practices in every environment.
