RuPaul is an internationally celebrated entertainer, drag icon, and host, judge, and executive producer of RuPaul’s Drag Race. As the most awarded Black artist in Emmy history, RuPaul has used his platform not only to champion LGBTQ+ visibility but also to speak powerfully on racial equality. Through his personal experiences growing up as a queer Black man in the American South, he has developed a deep understanding of intersectional identity and marginalisation. These lived realities are central to his advocacy work and inform his impact as a speaker. RuPaul speaks on a range of topics including racial justice, LGBTQ+ inclusion, intersectionality in media, and the power of self-expression as resistance.
RuPaul’s early career was marked by resilience and vision. He began performing in Atlanta’s underground scene before gaining mainstream visibility in 1989 with a cameo in The B-52’s Love Shack video. His 1993 breakout hit Supermodel (You Better Work) became an anthem for self-empowerment, launching him into stardom. That same year, he released his debut album, Supermodel of the World, followed by a ground-breaking partnership with MAC Cosmetics as their first drag spokesperson. Hosting The RuPaul Show on VH1 from 1996 to 1998, he became one of the first openly gay hosts on national television. In 2008, he began producing RuPaul’s Drag Race, which redefined drag culture on a global scale and laid the groundwork for his international success. He is also the author of multiple books including Workin’ It!: RuPaul’s Guide to Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Style and The House of Hidden Meanings.
RuPaul’s achievements are numerous and record-breaking. He has won 12 Primetime Emmy Awards, 5 MTV Movie and TV Awards, 9 Critics Choice Real TV Awards, and a Tony Award as a producer of A Strange Loop. In 2018, he was the first drag queen inducted onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His podcast, What’s the Tee? and global Drag Race franchises, including the 2019 UK edition, have further expanded his influence. He is also the recipient of the GLAAD Vito Russo Award for his trailblazing contributions to LGBTQ+ equality, and has been nominated for over 100 awards across television, music, and activism.
As a speaker, RuPaul combines charisma with compelling insights on the intersections of race, sexuality, gender, and fame. He addresses how systems of oppression affect marginalised communities and how visibility can serve as a powerful form of activism. His topics include breaking racial barriers in media, amplifying diverse voices, and redefining beauty and identity through art. With decades of lived experience, cultural leadership, and industry-breaking success, RuPaul is an essential voice in conversations on racial equality. He should be hired not only for his accolades, but for his transformative ability to inspire inclusivity, courage, and change.
