Dr Sian Proctor is a geoscientist, space explorer, artist, and science communicator who made history as the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft. Currently, she works as a Professor at South Mountain Community College and serves as a US Science Envoy. Driven by a passion for diversity, representation, and inclusion, Dr Sian uses her platform to advocate for racial equality, especially within STEM education and the space industry. As a speaker, she draws on her unique experiences to inspire underrepresented communities, highlighting the importance of access and visibility. Her talks cover a broad range of topics such as The Future of Education, Leadership Lessons from Living in a Mars Simulation, The Power to Connect, and Diversity in STEM, all aimed at creating equitable pathways in science and beyond.
Dr Sian’s journey began with a degree in Environmental Science, followed by a master’s in Geology and a PhD in Science Education. She has worked in education for over two decades, shaping the minds of students as a Professor of Geology. In 2009, she became a finalist in NASA’s astronaut selection process, a moment that further fuelled her passion for space and education. Alongside her teaching, she took part in numerous analogue astronaut missions, simulating life on Mars and the Moon to better understand human space exploration. These experiences became pivotal in her development as a thought leader in both space science and educational innovation.
In recent years, Dr Sian has reached new heights, most notably as the Pilot of the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission in 2021 – the first all-civilian mission to orbit Earth. She has since been appointed to the National Space Council Users’ Advisory Group and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her appointment as a US Science Envoy in 2024 further cemented her status as a global advocate for science diplomacy, diversity, and education. She continues to be a visible role model, especially for young women of colour in STEM. She has published three books – Earthlight, Space2Inspire, and Meals for Mars.
Organisations invite Dr Sian Proctor to speak because she offers far more than inspiration – she brings a lived experience grounded in science, education, and equity. Having navigated both academic and professional landscapes where representation has historically been lacking, she brings a unique perspective that bridges theory and practice. Her speaking topics explore modern learning, leadership, and sustainability, merging storytelling with strategy and vision with lived reality. Her ability to blend personal narrative with academic insight makes her an impactful voice in the movement for racial equality and inclusive innovation. She challenges institutions to do better while equipping individuals with the tools to lead change from within. For organisations seeking to promote racial equality, innovation, and inclusive excellence, Dr Sian Proctor is not just a speaker – she’s a catalyst.
Dr Sian Proctor is regularly booked to engage audiences at events, read their latest feedback below:
“Sian Proctor spoke at Edinboro University in October 2017 to a sellout crowd of more than 125 students and faculty. Her talk, “The Power to Connect,” was interactive, motivational, engaging and thought-provoking. The students are still talking about how inspiring she was to them! Many geoscience students attended the event because Sian is a 1992 geosciences graduate of Edinboro University. She showed them that with determination, focus, getting out of your comfort zone and using your connections, you can achieve your dreams!”
“Sian has made such an impact on our program in such a short amount of time! My students, age 50+, immediately fell in love with her presentation style and personality and they could not get enough of her classes. She is intelligent and motivational; she makes learning fun at any age. Aside from her excellent teaching skills, she is a pleasure to work with before and after the event. She responds quickly to all correspondence during the planning stages, arrives early for class, and is prepared with informative and well-thought-out discussion topics. I will hire her again and again!”
“Imagine the power of hearing up-front and intimate the true-life experience of someone who rose above thousands of candidates to the last cut-off for the opportunity of being an astronaut…and not make it…speak on the personal success of that experience, and the transformative power of all of life’s experiences. The takeaway from Sian Proctor’s story is as vital as it is far-reaching. As a scientist, accomplished academic, and highly-regarded science communicator, Dr. Sian Proctor’s story is less a tale of where she has been then it is a description of where she is going and why we should care. The fact is when it comes to pursuing our dreams-and discovering for ourselves the multi-faced value of the journey-we should all care. And upon hearing Sian Proctor speak, believe me when I say, you will care.”
