Finding My Voice: My Journey to the West Wing and the Path Forward

Valerie Jarrett is a distinguished American businesswoman and former government official, currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of The Obama Foundation. In this role, she oversees initiatives aimed at inspiring and empowering individuals to effect positive change in their communities. Valerie’s personal experiences have profoundly shaped her advocacy for racial equality. Born in Shiraz, Iran, to African-American parents, she faced challenges upon returning to the United States, including bullying due to her unique background. These experiences instilled in her a deep commitment to social justice. As a racial equality speaker, she addresses topics such as “Where Do We Go From Here?” and “Building a 21st Century Workplace that Reflects the Values and Needs of the 21st Century Worker”, focusing on themes of equality, inclusion, and empowerment.

Valerie’s professional journey began in the legal sector, practising as an attorney in private law firms. However, her passion for public service led her to transition into government roles. She served as Deputy Corporation Counsel for Finance and Development under Chicago Mayor Harold Washington, and later as Deputy Chief of Staff for Mayor Richard M. Daley. In these capacities, she was instrumental in urban planning and development projects, notably hiring Michelle Robinson (later Michelle Obama), which marked the beginning of her longstanding association with the Obama family. Her tenure as Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development and Chairwoman of the Chicago Transit Authority further showcased her dedication to enhancing urban communities and addressing systemic inequalities.

In 2009, Valerie was appointed as Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama, becoming the longest-serving senior advisor in history. She oversaw the Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs and chaired the White House Council on Women and Girls. Her efforts were pivotal in promoting policies aimed at expanding access to the middle class, supporting American businesses, and championing equality and opportunity for all Americans. Post-administration, she has continued her advocacy through various roles, including serving on the boards of organisations such as Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., Ralph Lauren Corporation, and the Sesame Street Workshop. In 2019, she published her New York Times bestselling book, Finding My Voice: My Journey to the West Wing and the Path Forward. Her contributions have been recognised with accolades like TIME’s 100 Most Influential People award and Forbes 50 Over 50.

As a speaker, Valerie delves into critical issues such as criminal justice and police reform, civil rights, women’s equality, and politics. Her presentations draw from her extensive experience in public service and her personal journey of overcoming adversity. She offers insightful perspectives on creating inclusive workplaces, the importance of civic engagement, and strategies for achieving social justice. Organisations seeking a speaker with a profound understanding of racial equality and a proven track record of effecting change will find Valerie’s insights both enlightening and inspiring.
