Black Sports Speakers

Black athletes have long been central to the UK’s sporting success, particularly in football, where they make up around 30% of professional players. Yet, their influence rarely extends outside of the pitch. Only 3% of board members across Sport England and UK Sport-funded bodies identify as Black, highlighting a stark imbalance in leadership representation. By hiring a Black sports speaker and exploring their stories, we can inspire meaningful dialogue and advocate for greater equity in all areas of sport and beyond. Is Racism Common in Sports?

Racism in sport remains an issue: a 2020 survey by Sporting Equals found 83% of BAME competitors in British sport have experienced discrimination, yet only 8% felt their concerns were properly addressed. Abuse comes not only from teammates or opponents – reported by 37% – but also from systemic issues like lack of career progression and poor leadership representation. In football, 31% of Premier League and 43% of English Football League players have faced online racism, while, despite delivering iconic Olympic performances, athletes of African descent made up just 10% of participants at the 2020 Games. These findings underscore the urgent need for structural reform and accountability to foster genuine inclusivity in sport.
